In another example of the desire to win being prioritized over a duty to seek justice Harris County District Attorney’s office has been sued in federal court for imprisoning a rape victim during the trial of her attacker.

This, like my earlier post about the death medals in Montgomery County, is emblematic of the culture issues in DA’s offices where using any and all means to secure a conviction is lauded rather than questioned. In this case even the well being of the victim was ignored in a prosecutor’s mad desire to secure convictions and appear to his bosses as a “gets it done at all costs” prosecutor.

If securing a rape conviction in this case required jailing the rape victim and having her beat up by inmates and guards after having a mental break down then perhaps the conviction wasn’t worth getting. I imagine the victim in this case certainly doesn’t think that the appropriate response by the state was to lock her up when she is the victim.

The purpose of the prosecution is to seek justice and there is nothing just about this story.
